The Trauma Informed Teacher: Learning How a Child's Trauma Can Impact the Classroom (Part1)
This is an introductory session to help teachers understand what trauma is and how it manifests itself in the classroom. We will go through the seven major risk factors and the five B's of trauma--how trauma affects the brain, biology, behaviour, body, and beliefs of a child. By looking through the lens of trauma, we will learn that change happens when thinking shifts from, "What is wrong with this child?" to, "What happened to this child?" and to see the need behind the behaviour. Lastly, we will address the role that fear plays in children from hard places.

Educators need a wide variety of tools. Children from hard places have unique histories and as such, require unique tools. With these insights you will be able to create a classroom where everyone is able to learn. While this session will focus on the ins and outs of trauma, you will take away many useable tools. The beauty of Trust Based Relational Intervention is that it works in any setting, with every age group and does not require a big budget to implement.

The Trauma-Informed Classroom
Now more than ever, we are witnessing the impact of trauma on the students and families we work with, and on ourselves as educators. Thankfully, the news isn’t all bad. There are strategies we can use to enhance and adapt our existing practices to respond to trauma needs within ourselves, our students, and our colleagues. In this session you will be introduced to the principles of trauma-informed practice through stories and examples of how schools in Alberta and around the world are implementing them into their classrooms. You’ll leave with practical strategies you can implement right away, and you’ll likely learn that a lot of what you’re already doing as an educator is trauma-informed.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is the New World
Organizations across North America are grappling with questions around Diversity and Inclusion. While most have a general understanding of what this may look like, and why it is important, very real questions remain. Can we go further in our understanding and practice? What does that look like? What challenges might we be faced with and what are the benefits we can realize when we open our organization more fully to these concepts? The good news is the answers to these questions and more can be discovered along the way.Aaron Paquette takes the audience on a journey of obstacle and triumph that is both deeply personal and universal. Through story and experience the societal, structural, and imaginary divisions that separate us are challenged, making way for a robust and resilient approach to bringing out the best in those around us and in our organizations.

Teachers These Days
Based on the bestselling book 'Teachers These Days' by Laurie McIntosh and Dr. Jody Carrington, Laurie will hold a discussion and reflection around what we have been taught is a "good" teacher. We will examine in depth the stories and strategies in the book and spend time discussing safe places to land in these trying times. Teachers can expect to leave with strategies especially surrounding lid flips, light ups and emotional regulation of ourselves and our learners.

This session is all about the connection. What people will remember most about you, your legacy, will have so much more to do with a felt sense than it ever will with words or numbers. It will remind our teachers that their job is to shine the incredible light that brought them into this profession in the first place. It will remind them that whatever you got on any given day is (more than) enough (something all teachers need to hear right now!)

The Trauma Informed Teacher: Tools and Strategies for Success (Part 2)
It is never more important to be right than it is to relate rightly. In this session we will explore the tools used in Trust Based Relational Intervention. The I.D.E.A.L. response helps us to remember and apply the "connecting while correcting" approach. The Levels of Engagement tools will help us know how much correction is necessary to stop and correct the behaviour. We will also talk about "Time-In's", how to teach regulation, give choices, offer compromises, and the beauty of Re-Do's.
Many sessions deal with trauma and what it is. While this is foundational and necessary to understand, many parents and teachers want to know what to do to deal with challenging behaviours. This session will give you those tools. The beauty of Trust Based Relational Intervention is that it works in any setting, with every age group and does not require a big budget to implement.

THE SHIFT: From Bullying & Stress To Bringing KINDness & Calm Into Your Life & Classroom-THIS WILL NOT BE RECORDED.
As a K-12 school teacher I quickly realized my role was more than teaching the curriculum. My students were stressed and anxious trying to manage their emotions, but unable to do so. They were struggling with bullying, depression, anger issues, insomnia and many kids in my classroom were labelled ADD or ADHD, unable to focus, concentrate or even sit still. Teachers and parents were also struggling. I wanted to do something. I wanted to help. So, I developed a beKIND Mindfulness Training & Kit specifically for teachers, students and parents.
During this session, I teach a variety of mindfulness techniques to manage stress, better cope with change and life’s challenges, improve focus and for self-regulation. The goal being, to practice these techniques to develop behaviors that contribute to the well-being of self and others throughout their life.
Make THE SHIFT by joining us, our Global beKIND Mindfulness Movement of over 25 000 kids, teens and adults as we begin Day 1 of the beKIND Mindfulness Challenge. The beKIND Mindfulness Challenge gives everyone the opportunity to demonstrate KINDness, respect and caring for self and others in hopes we can all lead healthier lives physically, emotionally, mentally and socially.

Spreading the Gift of Being Contagious. Its's a Good Thing!
Every school year, teachers are faced with new discipline challenges and new behaviour issues. This workshop presents an alternative approach to behaviour. Being contagious with behaviours and decision-making goes two ways. From day one, we can work with kids on using the act of being contagious to become an influencer in their classroom and in their community. They start to see that behaviours, both positive and negative, have the ability to influence way outside of their little space. When kids see positive behaviour as a catalyst for real classroom change and a better day-to-day experience, they start to value being contagious and seek out to be the change they wish to see.
