Weaving Indigenous Foundational Knowledges Throughout Curriculum and Pedagogy
Following a three year University of Alberta study, this session brings forth the experiences of three Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) pre-service teachers and their mentor teachers, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous. Throughout the study our researchers recognized a disconnection amongst the in-service teachers’ understanding of curriculum outcomes and the implementation of TQS #5. Many were concerned that there was not space within the curriculum for Indigenous foundational knowledges and understood this endeavour to be an add on. However, collaboratively, mentor and pre-service teachers worked together to weave Indigenous foundational knowledges throughout their Social Studies curriculum and pedagogical practices. Within this presentation you will hear stories of Indigenous ways of being and coming to know, as well as concrete classroom examples to think alongside.

Content-Area Writing: Writing to Learn, Learning to Write
What if a convention session could make it easier for you to help students succeed with writing in your content-area classroom?
I’ve heard from many teachers who feel ill equipped in this area. “How can I help students who struggle with writing in my class? What are some effective strategies? Are there creative approaches that might be more engaging for my students?”
This session was created as a direct response to these questions. We’ll look at the value of writing as a tool for increasing student engagement and learning. Most importantly, we’ll explore practical strategies to help all students succeed. Then you can just put your feet up and cruise through the rest of the year!
Haha. JK–you’re a teacher! (But it’ll help, I promise.)

Permeating Laudato Si: Cultivating a Green Catholic School from the Inside Out
How do we help our students’ respond to God’s call to be stewards of creation while learning about complex Catholic social teachings? In this session, you will learn more about the importance of Laudato Si and how teaching students the Catholic Moral Decision Making Framework can guide them to action. See an example of how this was developed in a grade 4 classroom. Walk away with a planning template, ideas and resources to help you share this way of living with your students and staff.

Pope Francis’ first encyclical, Laudato Si, addresses all of humanity and calls us to address the deep rooted causes of the ecological crisis facing the Earth. Rooted in Scripture, he provides guidance on how to resolve these issues. As leaders in Catholic education, it is our responsibility to help our students learn about Church teachings and use these teachings to grow in their faith and be stewards of the Earth.

This session will be applicable to both classroom and school-wide social justice projects.

Remembrance, War and Conflict
Every year, we participate in Remembrance Day in our classrooms and in our schools. We do art projects, we write, we attend a ceremony, we reflect, and we remember.

The wars that many of us learned about as children continue to get farther and further away from our current day, and new wars and conflicts continue to happen. Does our teaching and school cover or do the same things on this topic or at this time every year? Do our classroom experiences extend beyond Remembrance Day to cover refugees and current conflicts?

This presentation examines picture books, novels, online sites, and virtual and physical learning experiences to bring to your classroom or school for both Remembrance Day and beyond. Diversity of perspectives is given special consideration.

Creating a Sustainable Future Together: Engaging Elementary Students in Climate Solutions
Climate change is one of the most pressing issues we face, and students know this. A 2020 survey of over 500 Alberta youths revealed that a strong majority of students are concerned about their future as a result of climate change and want to learn what we can do to address it. In this highly engaging session, learn how to steer clear of gloom and doom and instill confidence, optimism and connectedness in young learners by nurturing a positive relationship with nature. We’ll also demonstrate how it’s never too early to engage your students in real-world, age-appropriate climate solutions that are fun and build hope and agency as students learn how they can play a role in helping build a sustainable future. We’ll also share connections to the Alberta curriculum and many high-quality resources you can use immediately with your students.

Honoring the Logan Boulet Legacy: Creating a Culture of Organ Donation
Logan Boulet inspired over 100,000 Canadians to register to become organ donors after the Humbolt Tragedy in April 2018. In 2019, the family of Logan Boulet held the first annual national Green Shirt Day in honour of their son Logan and the Broncos family. They aimed to increase awareness about the importance of organ donation and honour Logan’s precious gift. This highly impactful annual campaign is known as Green Shirt Day and takes place on April 7. Knowledge is key to addressing young people’s concerns about organ and tissue donation. It can help them feel empowered to talk about donation with their families and equip them to make informed choices in the future. In this session an excellent array of classroom resources is shared to teach about organ donation and plan Green Shirt Day activities in your school and community. Presenters include the perspectives of Logan’s family, a transplant recipient, medical team members who treat pediatric transplant patients and the creator of the educational materials.
