International Teaching
I was feeling stuck and uninspired, it was time for a change of pace, it was time to go on an adventure. I got permission to take a leave of absence, and signed a contract for teaching at a Canadian School in the capital of Cambodia. Then COVID hit. The world stopped. I decided to honour the contract and began the process of heading away across the world.

Trusting in the school leadership, in my own inner strength and in humanity I left Canada for teaching overseas. COVID made everything complicated, but then so was moving across the world. I packed up my 2 large suitcases and boarded the plane. With only the best wishes of family and friends and my dream to sustain me I began my epic journey of self discovery. Teaching in a vastly different system, living in a strange place, no pressures or expectations; life was transformative.

Many people dream about travel and working in foreign countries, but few of us get around to it. I will share details about how I overcame my fears and self doubt to live a year of tremendous adventure. Traveling in a tropical storm, for profit schooling, sunrise at Angkor Wat, market food, poverty, corruption, multiple isolations and amazing friendships are just some of the experiences that I will share with you. I will share stories and photos about the hurdles, the challenges and the Instagram worthy dream moments. I will share stories of my year overseas that help me today stay centered on what truly keeps me centered.

This session is for anyone who wonders what it would be like to begin their own epic journey. An honest story with an opportunity to ask questions at the end.

How to Feel Happier, No Matter What’s Happening
I’ll be happier when I… lose some weight, make more money, get a better position, retire, or fill in the blank with your own refrain. Sound familiar? In this session you’ll learn how to:

-transform your happiness set point so that you feel happier more of the time
-implement practical skills and powerful techniques that will boost your overall happiness
-stay calm, centered and grounded, even in chaos
-make your thoughts your allies
-own your life and gain clarity on what you really want

Don’t waste another day feeling unhappy or unfulfilled. Come to this session to start making immediate changes to feel happier, no matter what.

Stressing Wisely: A Radical Shift in How We Show Up and Excel in All Areas of Our Lives
Our collective and personal well-being has been deeply impacted by recent world events. There is a need for a proactive approach to ensuring our people are well equipped to face the unparallel stress, unrest, and uncertainty that are becoming more common. To maintain excellence in all areas of one’s life knowing how to stress wisely and recover is key. In this keynote, Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe explores how to use a multi-dimensional approach to wellness that promotes moving theory into committed action through the five principles of stressing wisely, including signature strength activation, emotional regulation, and creative release and recovery. By building awareness and personal accountability, participants will be able to implement personal wellness care systems that are sustainable, realistic, and time efficient. And, by doing so, enhance personal and professional performance and satisfaction.

Self-Care in a Pandemic
Join us for a session focused on building a personal wellness & self-care practice using the Self-Care in Disaster Times & Beyond Toolkit.
About the toolkit: Developed by Alberta Health Services, the self-care project emerged from disaster responses in Alberta, including the pandemic. We were moved by people’s stories and experiences and the need for information and practical tools for self-awareness, personal and team wellness, and organizational planning to meet self-care needs. To quote an impacted responder: “Everyone talks about (self-care) in theory, but what does it look like on a practical level and how do we see it not as a “luxury” or “indulgent”, but more as remembering to top up our gas tank, and recharge our battery.”

About this session: We will explore the Personal Wellness workbook and help you to:
• Recognize the role and importance of self-care within the unique context of disaster and emergency response and recovery, including the pandemic.
• Understand the warning signs/red flags for stress and know when to seek help.
• Reflect on and develop a self-care plan.

Using a variety of simple techniques I will teach you how to lead a healthier life physically, mentally and emotionally.
If not now, then when?

Teaching Sexual Health...The Good, The Bad, and the Downright Awkward!
Yikes! Somebody asked me a question about sexual health…now what!

Teaching sexual health in the classroom can feel awkward and intimidating for all of us!
Why is one breast bigger than the other? How do I know if I am gay? Teacher, when did you start having sex? Why did my daughter learn about birth control at school? Come to this interactive session to have an overview of the Alberta Ed/AHS resources available for educators and supports for your classroom from grades 4-12; and for yourself! How to Be More Successful (Hint: It’s the Opposite of Doing More)
You have a lot on the go, and you have to admit, you’re pretty good at what you do. In fact, on paper, you look fantastic. The problem is, although you set big goals and accomplish them, you kind of feel like something’s missing. And possibly, that something is the reason why you’re crazy busy, on the go all the time and (although you don’t like to admit it…) exhausted.

What if the missing piece to being even more successful was to take a conscious pause? What if you could amplify your success even more by celebrating yourself? Would you benefit from taking a look back and acknowledging who you’ve become, before plunging forward towards the next goal? (The answer to that last one is a very big yes.)

Why attend this session?
>to discover practical ways to treat yourself with more love and kindness
>to learn how to acknowledge yourself so you feel more fulfilled and appreciated
>to give yourself permission to pause and celebrate
>to stop prolonging your happiness by becoming a better receiver
>to learn how to excel at life outside of productivity

You’ll leave this session with:
>Very clear self-acknowledgement and deep celebration practices that you can implement immediately
>Increased self-love, along with more confidence and a greater sense of connection
>New insights, possibilities and openings (that could truly alter the rest of your life)
>Joy, fulfillment and satisfaction

A Protocol for Schools to address Suicidal Ideation amongst Students
In recent years the importance of child and adolescent mental health has been discussed in many forums, including within the education sector. Interest in mental health supports has also increased as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. As well, suicide has been identified as a leading cause of death for Canadian youth and building mental health capacity is a responsibility of all human services sectors to comprehensively address suicide prevention and intervention.

School staff play a vital role in the identification of mental health concerns, including the identification of risk for suicide and supporting youth to seek help when expressing suicidal thoughts or behaviour. Over the course of a career working within a school setting, it is not unusual for a school staff to experience an instance when they need to meet the immediate mental health needs of a student and/or maintain their safety. However, school staff often report feeling uncertain about how to best support a student in these circumstances.

A School-based Suicidal Ideation Response Protocol (SI Protocol) was launched in August 2019 by Alberta Health Services and is highlighted in the Alberta Government’s Pathways to hope: best practices in suicide prevention for Alberta schools (April 2020). It offers a standardized and structured approach for all roles within a school, whether school teachers/support staff, school mental health providers, or school administrators. The protocol contains a step-by-step process for responding to a distressed student, with activities that are appropriate to the person’s role and training. Implementation of the SI Protocol is supported by online training (freely available through the Alberta Health Services Mental Health Online Resources for Educators website; https://more.hmhc.ca).
The SI Protocol can be adopted by an individual school staff member, a school, or across an entire school authority. Between 2019 and 2021 a number of school authorities across Alberta have implemented the SI Protocol. They have provided positive feedback about its impact to date.

This presentation will provide an overview of the SI Protocol, describe the benefits experienced by early adopters, and highlight the evaluation findings to date. It will also outline the results of recent research related to completely suicide risk assessments virtually and what to pay particular attention to.

This presentation will benefit you if you:
- are interested in support child and adolescent mental health in education settings,
- are interested in improving your comfort or confidence in addressing suicidal ideation,
- want a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities within a school setting related to suicide intervention, and
- want to provide the most appropriate response for a student and their family.

How to Make a Hero - Heroes Programs
According to a study from the Government of Canada, 70% of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence.

After spending decades working on the ground with youth who struggled with addictions and mental health, our team realized a common pattern across a collection of individual stories: a profound event occurring from the ages of 11-14 that set the youth’s life on a trajectory for using. It was clear that something had to be done before these kids started using that gave them the resilience to overcome the traumatic event that would have set them on the path to being an addict.

Impact Society is an Alberta-based charitable organization with the mission to help grow the confidence and resiliency of youth so they can build long-term values that contribute to a flourishing life. Founded in 1998, Impact Society is dedicated to helping community leaders, educators, and youth workers understand the process necessary to build up young people’s strengths. By working with, supporting, and celebrating educators, we can help youth undercover their unique gifts and abilities that will allow them to impact themselves and the world around them.

Our goal is to empower 1 million children across Canada to uncover their unique gifts and abilities.

The Heroes programs are curriculum-based resources for students, communities, and families that improve youth’s mental health and well-being. The Heroes programs are strength-based and science-backed to help young people grow in their capacity to relate to others, support each other, and build a flourishing community. Our programs do not merely teach the psychology behind mental illness and addictions, but rather equip youth with the values, confidence, and resilience to overcome life’s traumatic obstacles.

Each of the Heroes programs is designed for a unique member of the educational journey. The Heroes and Heroes 2 programs are designed for youth and educators from grades 6-10. Heroes at Home is a strength-based program for caregivers looking to extend the system of support beyond the classroom. While the Heroes are Warriors program is our Heroes program with Indigenous contextualization. It is a simple but effective twelve-session character education experience that helps participants see and build what’s already inside them—greatness.

Over 200,000 students, educators, and caregivers have participated to date and through extensive research to analyze the effectiveness of our programs, we can confidently say that the Heroes program empowers youth to seize opportunities and overcome challenges. Research shows that our evidence-based Heroes programs reduce negative actions and behaviours that can be considered harmful to the community and addresses prejudice and discrimination to create more respectful, equal, and positive communities. Our research shows:

The Heroes programs inspire youth to succeed. Studies on program participants show a 16% increase in school involvement, 19% increase in commitment to learning and a 32% increase in family communication. Following the program, 67% of students feel more optimistic about life and set personal life goals.

Circumstances, fears, and labels are addressed, broken down, and turned into strengths. This is shown by a 23% increase in self-esteem and a 35% increase in self-efficacy.
Confident youth perform better in school and life. Strengths central to the commitment to learning see significant increases. The importance of achievement increases by 27%, school engagement by 17% and school work by 14%.

We understand the role that educators play in helping us achieve our goal of serving 1 million of Canada’s youth. Our programs are a cost-effective investment for educators and caregivers interested in interrupting the patterns of addictions, and instead, giving youth the tools necessary to overcome adversity and create impact.

What if . . . we could work together to help regulate a teen's emotions?
What if . . . we could reduce bullying?
What if . . . we could break through social isolation and prevent a teen or young persons from taking their life?
What if . . . you had the skills to juggle your own adult feelings while trying to address your teen's feelings?
What if . . . CHAOS and CRISIS could be a stepping stone?
What if . . . this could be an opportunity to have conversation and create resilience?

These topics and so much more. Who could benefit? Come join me in this session.

We live in desperate and unpredictable times with mental health going through the roof. Having more than 35 years in education, I want to help continue to transform people's lives, including teachers, administrators, parents and especially our youth. It is essential that we create connections, have courageous conversations and establish relationships so that kids don't fall through the cracks: not knowing if anyone hears/listens to them, understands them. values them or if anyone even cares!

Wear Your Weird
There’s nothing quite so heart-breaking as seeing a child whose self-esteem and self-belief have taken a serious hit.

Many kids, afraid to get it wrong, start to shrink, cover up and suppress what makes them so unique, so they can fit in to the images they see, knowing that if they act or appear too different, they may be isolated or bullied.

But we can change that.

Imagine watching the kids under your loving care go from confusion to clarity, from lacking direction and feeling powerless to understanding themselves and their purpose a little more, and to feeling empowered throughout the process.

The Wear Your Weird program is designed to introduce kids to the process of discovering who they are through the use of hands-on activities and dynamic discussions, uncovering what makes them fantastically unique and yes, weird.

The results? All those special qualities they were born with become strengths and superpowers—not something to be ashamed of or something to hide.

I designed this program after working with kids on many different levels and in various settings, seeing their struggles with using their voice or worrying about standing out in a crowd.

I’ve seen the difference the Wear Your Weird program makes in the minds and hearts of kids of all ages.

From primary school to junior high, the kids who’ve taken the WYW program feel…

excited and empowered
confident and courageous
valued and valuable
..and most importantly, they believe they can proudly wear their weird after all.

The Stress of Change
If there is one thing we have all been inundated with lately, it’s change. Constant change. When it comes to coping with change, it is important to remember there are 2 aspects: practical and emotional. Many times we are forced to dive into the practical aspect only to find that we are struggling. To help build your change resilience, it is equally as important to deal with the emotions surrounding the change.

Participants will explore:
• Emotional responses to change
• Discuss how our thoughts affect the emotion of change.
• Assess strategies to shift unhelpful thinking and tools to help with the practical side of implementing change

THE SHIFT: From Bullying & Stress To Bringing KINDness & Calm Into Your Life & Classroom-THIS WILL NOT BE RECORDED.
As a K-12 school teacher I quickly realized my role was more than teaching the curriculum. My students were stressed and anxious trying to manage their emotions, but unable to do so. They were struggling with bullying, depression, anger issues, insomnia and many kids in my classroom were labelled ADD or ADHD, unable to focus, concentrate or even sit still. Teachers and parents were also struggling. I wanted to do something. I wanted to help. So, I developed a beKIND Mindfulness Training & Kit specifically for teachers, students and parents.
During this session, I teach a variety of mindfulness techniques to manage stress, better cope with change and life’s challenges, improve focus and for self-regulation. The goal being, to practice these techniques to develop behaviors that contribute to the well-being of self and others throughout their life.
Make THE SHIFT by joining us, our Global beKIND Mindfulness Movement of over 25 000 kids, teens and adults as we begin Day 1 of the beKIND Mindfulness Challenge. The beKIND Mindfulness Challenge gives everyone the opportunity to demonstrate KINDness, respect and caring for self and others in hopes we can all lead healthier lives physically, emotionally, mentally and socially.

‘Listening, Laughing and Leading’
In ‘Listening, Laughing and Leading’ Mitchell shares his long journey to being a better listener. The themes are introduced with songs on guitar and banjo. Mitchell outlines how his experiences as teacher and principal led him to examine his listening skills.
After retirement from education, Mitchell continued his transformation from speaker to listener while working as Faculty Development Facilitator at the College of the Rockies and as Social Governance Officer for the Ktunaxa First Nation. He learned about Indigenous listening from the Ktuanxa and from Dr. Laura Brearley’s ‘Indigenous Deep Listening’ project in Australia.
The following topics are addressed with research, theories, songs and anecdotes:
Listening Info You Already Know: a review of listening research, types of listening and habits of poor listeners.
Listening to Ourselves: you can’t truly listen to others until you’ve listened to yourself. How do we listen to ourselves? Finding our “sweet spot” on the introvert-extrovert continuum. What drains our energy and what restores it?
Listening to Students: Dr. Scott Peck’s Creative Upward Cycle of Growth explains how listening builds relationships with students.
Listening to Colleagues: finding a listening partner to share the journey.
SSLANT Program: a program that can be implemented in the classroom to encourage respectful communication among students. It also encourages shy students to assert themselves and to participate in classroom discussion. Reflecting on ideas from the book Quiet, participants discuss how these strategies could impact students.
Laughter: The Open Loop: explores how laughter unites people and creates a trusting climate. In a neurological sense, laughter represents the shortest distance between two people because it instantly interlocks limbic systems.
How Listening and Laughing Inform Servant Leadership: knowing who we are, what we believe and what we value, should inform our actions as leaders and our communication patterns.

Honoring the Logan Boulet Legacy: Creating a Culture of Organ Donation
Logan Boulet inspired over 100,000 Canadians to register to become organ donors after the Humbolt Tragedy in April 2018. In 2019, the family of Logan Boulet held the first annual national Green Shirt Day in honour of their son Logan and the Broncos family. They aimed to increase awareness about the importance of organ donation and honour Logan’s precious gift. This highly impactful annual campaign is known as Green Shirt Day and takes place on April 7. Knowledge is key to addressing young people’s concerns about organ and tissue donation. It can help them feel empowered to talk about donation with their families and equip them to make informed choices in the future. In this session an excellent array of classroom resources is shared to teach about organ donation and plan Green Shirt Day activities in your school and community. Presenters include the perspectives of Logan’s family, a transplant recipient, medical team members who treat pediatric transplant patients and the creator of the educational materials.

The “Silent” Bully: The Power of Words vs. Non-Verbal Communication in the Workplace
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” A British rhyme meant to help children stand up to bullying and intimidation. But is that really true? As adults, we know that words DO hurt and that the painful feeling lasts a long time. While words do hurt us, intimidation and bullying do not have to be verbal: the dismissive flick of the hand, the rolling of the eyes, the crossing of the arms on the chest, the “see through you” attitude. The “silent”, non-verbal bullying hurts more, especially when we try to figure out “what we did wrong”.
Based on the latest research in the fields of non-violent communication and emotional intelligence, as well as through case studies and situation analysis, Maria will give you the necessary tools to decipher and deal with the situations in a professional way. Through examples taken from her personal and professional life and by having an open, honest conversation, Maria will demonstrate how you, as a leader, as well as a team member, can promote a safe working environment where people are not afraid to give honest feedback, while you lead them mindfully.

How to Overcome Procrastination
Is procrastination enhancing your life? Probably not. Then why does it happen? You probably know what action you want to take but you don't know how to get yourself to do it, whether it's taking steps towards your big dreams, or just doing the little things that need to get done. It's not just about time management or motivation.

In this session, you'll learn:

1- My signature process for understanding why you’re procrastinating (because if you just start slapping on band aid strategies, they won’t work; you’ve got to go a little deeper)

2- 4 Strategic skills you can use to get into action-taking-mode for any project (so that whenever you feel stuck on something, you’ll know exactly what to do)

3- The absolute best way to find clarity for what it is that you really want out of life (but beware, you’ll never be able to say “I don’t know my purpose” again)

4- Some fascinating metaphysics - because who doesn’t want to know more about how you can make things easier???

5- The number one thing that’s holding you back and a simple strategy for moving through it

6- The simple but powerful method for getting the most out of your time no matter how much you have going on in your life

Attend this session to learn the strategic skills you can use to get into action-taking-mode for any project.
